خلاصه مقالهThe Silent Sound of Suicide in Young Children Sanaz Norouzi Assistant Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Tabriz University of Medical Sciences Recent studies have shown that younger children can comprehend the concept of suicide, experience suicidal ideation and behavior, and die by suicide at rates higher than previously expected. Mortality data indicate that children younger than age 10 can die by suicide. It is important to address historical misconceptions regarding younger children's capacity to understand the concept of suicide and engage in suicidal behavior. An international systematic review of articles published from 1986 to 2021 on self-harm and suicidal behaviors in community samples of children aged 12 years and under revealed that 7.5% of children reported experiencing suicidal ideation, 1.4% had engaged in self-harm, 2.2% reported having a suicide plan, and 1.3% reported attempting suicide (Geoffroy et al., 2022). There is a need to better understand the unique and less recognized characteristics of suicide and its etiological factors in young children. According to research findings, suicides among young children and early adolescents often involve male victims who die by hanging, strangulation, or suffocation, typically occurring in their homes. These young individuals frequently experience relationship problems with family members and friends (rather than romantic partners), and leaving a suicide note is less common. Additionally, they are more likely to have ADHD, with or without hyperactivity (less frequently depression or dysthymia). Other risk factors include disengagement from education or employment and previous deliberate self-harm. Negative interpersonal relationships appear to be a key characteristic of these suicides, with higher instances of peer conflict, exposure to bullying, and abuse. To conduct effective risk assessments with young children, it is essential to consider their cognitive development, verbal skills, concepts of time and causality, as well as their understanding of death and suicide.
