| خلاصه مقاله | Background and Aims: Overweight or obese people are exposed to weight stigma or discrimination. Weight-based discrimination (WBD) is increasing in different countries. This stigma can cause psychological and physiological harms, including lower quality of life, social isolation, stress and anxiety, depression, lower help-seeking behavior. The aim of this study was to assess stigmatizing attitudes toward obesity among medical students in North-West of Iran. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional survey the anti-fat attitudes scale (AFA) was applied which consisted of three subscales of Dislike, Fear of Fat, Willpower in 13 items. A total of 40 medical students of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences were participated and responded on a Likert scale. The questionnaire was distributed among obese students and participation was voluntary. The statistical analysis of data was carried out by means of the SPSS 16. Results: Of all participants, 87.5% (n = 35) had stigmatizing attitudes toward obesity. Women perceived more stigmatization than men (16/20 than 9/20). The age of the participants was not related to the responses. Discussion: Our findings indicate that stigmatizing attitudes toward obesity are prevalent among medical students of this part of the country. Appropriate interventions are needed to shape correct understandings in the cultural beliefs in the society and mass media as the main correlates of this phenomenon. |
