خلاصه مقالهBackground and Aims: Obesity during the pregnancy is known as a leading risk factor for maternal and fetal/neonatal complications including gestational diabetes, pregnancy-induced hypertension, preeclampsia, caesarean delivery, post-partum hemorrhage, and structural anomalies. This review aimed to give a better insight into the prevalence of obesity and overweight in pregnancy in different areas of Iran. Materials and Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of population-based studies of maternal body mass index (BMI) in Iran. All published articles in PubMed, Embase, CINAHL and the British Nursing Index were searched with relevant keywords. Studies which met the eligible criteria were included in this review. Meta-analysis was done using Review Manager Software with heterogeneity assessed by the chi-squared and the I2 statistic. Random effect models were used unless otherwise indicated. Results: The obesity prevalence in national studies during pregnancy ranged from 12.8 to 36.9 percent. The range of overweight was 24.2 to 43.5 percent. Obesity was more likely in older and multiparous mothers. There were significant heterogeneities in terms of measurement methods and assessing time of maternal obesity across studies. Conclusion: Our results show that maternal obesity is high in the country. Proper and timely interventions should be developed to reduce the burden on maternal and child health and avoid undesired side effects
