خلاصه مقالهBackground and Aims: Obesity as a global public health issue is increasing among children, which may lead to various morbidities. Mothers’ beliefs and attitudes have important impact on the child health and life style as their key caregivers. The aim of this study was to assess the Knowledge Attitude and Practice (KAP) among mothers regarding obesity in children. Materials and Methods: The was a cross-sectional study of mothers attending the health-care centers in Tabriz City in North-West of Iran. Participants included 36 mothers and their children aged 2–6 years. Mothers completed the questionnaire to assess maternal attitudes, beliefs and control over child feeding. The data for mother education, child’s body mass index (BMI), age, and gender were collected. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS version 16. Results: In total, the majority of mothers reported low level of concern for child weight. Mothers had more concerns about the weight gain and obesity for girls than boys. Mothers who had more pressure to eat were less educated. Twenty of mothers (57%) perceived obesity as a sign of good living. Mothers who had obese children were more concerned about eating than mothers with normal weight children. Conclusion: Our findings indicated that mothers are more concerned about weight loss than weight gain and obesity. It seems necessary to design and implement proper educational interventions to families about risk of obesity in children and correct dietary attitudes, and make them more sensitive about eating habits
