Introduction: ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot that generates natural-language (human-like text) utterances in reply to human prompts. It learns from internet text and then fine-tunes its responses via reinforcement learning from human feedback. ChatGPT was launched on November 30, 2022, and has attracted 100 million users in just two months after launching. To predict words, ChatGPT has been trained on a vast amount of text data from websites all around the Internet. Therefore, it is not fully transparent which datasets ChatGPT has digested. Applications of ChatGPT in nutrition science can include:
1- A tool for getting information
2- A tool for writing information
3- A tool for prescribing healthy eating and diets
4- A tool for generating nutritional diagnoses
In this narrative review, we investigate the advantages and disadvantages of using ChatGPT as a tool for prescribing healthy eating and diets.
Methods: In this study searching in various texts, and authentic scientific articles were used.
Results: In general, according to scientific studies, the advantages of using ChatGPT as a tool for prescribing healthy eating and diets include the following:
1- Providing clear answers that are relatively in line with scientific guidelines.
2- Offering crucial warnings about working with registered dietitians.
3- Providing step-by-step recipes for menus.
4- The possibility of providing a shopping list.
However, there are also some disadvantages of using ChatGPT for this purpose, which include:
1- ChatGPT answers to the same prompt may vary over time.
2- It is difficult to know which information a patient/client would receive.
3- ChatGPT may provide inappropriate food options on the menu.
4- The possibility of offering repetitive menus.
5- Failure to consider sex, age, food preferences, available budget, and cultural background.
Conclusion: ChatGPT can assist nutritionists, but it cannot be used as a replacement for their expertise and judgment because it uses both scientific and non-scientific opinions. In parallel, nutritionists should reinforce their profession to provide high-quality, accurate, and tailored nutrition counseling and care. |
