خلاصه مقالهBackground and aim: There is a growing trend in the aged population globally, 80% of whom are estimated to live in developing countries. This phenomenon increases the demand for healthcare services and geriatric medicine. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitude of internship medical students regarding the care of elders to identify gaps and plan for the developments. Material and methods: This was a cross-sectional study in Tabriz city. A pre-validated self-administered questionnaire was distributed to volunteer students to assess their knowledge and attitude about elder care consisting of 28 and 16 items, respectively. The knowledge was assessed with multiple choice questions with one right answer. The attitude was assessed on a Likert five-point scale, ranging from 5 to 1 score. The total score for knowledge was between 0 and 28 and the attitude score ranged from 16 to 80. These students were provided with a brief explanation of the questionnaire. Results: A total of twenty-eight medical interns of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences participated in this study. Seventeen percent of the subjects were females. Mean age was 23.7 (SD: 2.89). The mean knowledge score was 20.4 (SD: 3.61). The mean attitude score was 58.24 (SD: 9.21) about half of the students had low to moderate knowledge and attitude. Female and male students’ knowledge did not differ significantly. Conclusion: This study investigated the attitudes and knowledge of medical students toward older adult care. The findings showed that there are significant gaps in their preparation for providing appropriate care. It is recommended that medical schools in low and middle-income countries incorporate important items for geriatric care in the necessary curricula to ensure them be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide quality care to older adults as future healthcare professionals.
