But there are various problems in using social and news media such as dissemination of large amount of misinformation and rumors which is known as infodemic. Media literacy plays a decisive role in identifying and using reliable information sources and trusting or debunking the information published in social media. The aim of this study was to explore the strategies to improve media literacy among populations in order to tackle with infodemic.
Methods: A systematic literature review and content analysis was conducted. All related literatures published in PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL and Web of Science were extracted trough a systematic search strategies including controlled and natural language vocabularies. The search was restricted to January 2020 to May 2023. PRISMA-S diagram was used to illustrate the study selection process. The strategies were extracted through screening of the literatures by three researchers and the forth researcher checked the correspondence and differences. Studies in English language were included in the review. JBI thematic synthesis was used for coding and categorization of the themes and subthemes. After development of the themes a focus group discussion was used for the evaluation of the categories. This summary was extracted from the research plan approved by the Iran national committee for ethics in biomedical research and received the research ethics code: IR.TBZMED.REC.1401.756.
Results: 108 themes was identified through 258 articles and synthesized into 33 key strategies. The key strategies was categorized in to 5 Classes including: 1) Technology Convergence, 2) Artificial Intelligence, Machine learning, Virtual reality, mixed reality, 3) education and librarian’s intervention, 4) rules, regulation and governmental intervention 5) culture and ethics. Each class/cluster encompassed multiple unique approaches. For example in education and librarians intervention the critical thinking, evidence based approach, authority check , error detection, fact checking, were discussed. Technology convergence encompassed the internet of things, Machine learning, block chain, mobile, and social-media itself. All the themes and subthemes demonstrated through diagram.
Conclusion: To better utilization of social media for information literacy promotion people need to be mobilized with medial literacy and understanding of the fault holes. Modern information technology tools alongside with individual empowerment in medial literacy, critical thinking, evidence measure, and validation of information can be used to tackle with the infodemic in health information circulation through social and news media. |
