| خلاصه مقاله | The management of microbial infections in the central nervous system (CNS) is an important healthcare concern worldwide. The CNS is well protected against microbial invasion by barrier structures like the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB)[1,2]. A variety of microbial pathogens are able to reach the CNS by penetrating the BBB or the BCSFB or via the olfactory and trigeminal nerves, causing significant infections. Early diagnosis and treatment of CNS infections are key for patient survival, as these diseases are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. The presence of cellular barriers, in particular the BBB, significantly limits the diffusion of drugs into the infected area. Furthermore, the indiscriminate use of antibiotics in the last decades has increased the emergence of drug-resistant strains of pathogens, which represent a serious public health risk. It will be necessary to find novel therapeutic alternatives to overcome these challenges and reduce CNS infection-associated morbidity and mortality[3,4]. Nanotechnology-based approaches have exhibited a promising alternative impact on antimicrobial therapy. |
