خلاصه مقالهIntroduction: food labelling is one of the information promotion policies designed to support necessary information of the products that consumer purchase. However, food labeling giving incentives to the food industry to reformulate their products with healthier nutrients. This study has evaluated the consumers' knowledge, attitude and practice about the information on the food labels. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted as point of purchase survey among 550 shoppers in chain stores in Tabriz, Iran. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire which evaluated respondents’ knowledge, perception, and behaviors about information on food labels. Results: Results showed that 91.8 % of consumers had knowledge about food label information. Among all nutritional information included on food labels, people were most aware of the information about food's calories and fat content. Women were more aware of labeling than men (56.5 % vs 43.7 % of). Participants with academic education have the highest level of attention to food labels and the other socio-demographic characteristics have no significant association. there were a difference between men and women in terms of some reasons for paying attention to food labeling which was statistically significant including paying attention to the kind of food product, observing the price and observing the weight of products(p<0.05).Most of the respondents (84.7%) pay attention to food labels for Observing the expiration and production date and 51.6% were look at food price in the food labels and only 8.7% of participant reading the food labels to obtain the information about the food additives & artificial colors contents. Conclusion: Our study suggests that food labelling could be effective measure in health policy when consumer's nutrition knowledge and awareness increase about how to use and interpret the formation in the food labels
