| خلاصه مقاله | Hospitals wastewater is of concern due to the presence of chemical and pharmaceutical compounds. Conventional wastewater treatment methods are not able to completely remove these compounds due to their resistance to biological decomposition, and most of these compounds enter the environment unchanged through wastewater due to their resistance. Ciprofloxacin and vancomycin are antibiotics that have more side effects than other antibiotic classes and it is very important in terms of environmental threats. The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of activated carbon catalyzed ozonation (ACCO) and compare it with the absorption process on activated carbon and the single ozonation process (SOP) in removing the mentioned antibiotics in hospital wastewater. This study was conducted on a pilot plant scale in two separate discontinuous systems to remove the antibiotics of ciprofloxacin and vancomycin from hospital wastewater. Concentrations of 6, 4.5, 3 and 1.5 mg/liter of these antibiotics were manually added to the wastewater samples. In order to determine the contribution of ozonation processes, adsorption and finally the effect of the presence of activated carbon substrate, 1) single ozonation process (SOP), 2) single activated carbon and 3) activated carbon catalyzed ozonation (ACCO) was investigated. The results showed that the SOP is able to remove 6 mg/L vancomycin and ciprofloxacin in 45 and 65 minutes, respectively. In the single activated carbon process, the maximum adsorption efficiency of 52% for vancomycin and 40.5% for ciprofloxacin was achieved in 35 and 40 minutes, respectively. Using the ACCO process due to the synergistic effect of ozonation and adsorption of activated carbon led to the improvement of the process performance in such a way that the complete removal of 6 mg/L vancomycin in 20 minutes and ciprofloxacin in 25 minutes was achieved. According to the results of the present study, it can be concluded that the ACCO process can be considered as a suitable option for the pretreatment of hospital wastewater. |
