| خلاصه مقاله | Introduction: Symptomatic acute seizures are considered as one of the medical emergencies. The causes of acute symptomatic seizures in developed countries may differ from the causes in developing countries.
The aim of our study was to determine etiological risk factors among adult medical admissions in our community.
that can be useful in better prevention and control of seizures.
Materials and Methods: This study is a cross-sectional study (in a period of three years) by total sampling method, in patients admitted to the neurology ward with diagnose of acute symptomatic seizure. Demographic data and information about the patient's type of seizure, underlying diseases, drug history, systemic and neurological examination findings, routine lab data and EEG findings are gathered. Then data was analyzed with SPSS and statistical tests (P-value < 0.05)
Results: From 200 patients with mean age 49.6(29-70 years old),52% male and were 48% female.
55% of patients had no underlying disease and 45% of patients with underlying diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, kidney disease, stroke, suppressed immune system diseases and Intravenous Drug Abuser that highest prevalence is due to hypertension (20.5%). Then diabetes (12%), stroke , renal disease, suppressed immune disease , drug abuse .
Conclusion: According to our study results strokes and infectious diseases are the leading causes of symptomatic causes of seizures in adults. In our study traumatic patients are not included.
