| خلاصه مقاله | Background and Aim: Different studies show relation between short perineal body and
some pelvic floor dysfunction. The importance of perinal function has been neglected
by physicians generally. Some studies recommended to determine perineal length in
primigravid women during labor, because they believe that perinal trauma increased in
women with small perineal body (shorter than 40 millimeter) and affect their life quality
at the future. In this study we decided to measure perineal length in nulliparous women referring to educational-medical hospitals of Tabriz university of medical science.
Methods: in a cross sectional study, 300 nulliparous women were recruited. after getting
the informed consent from every one, their height, weight, shoe size, were measured. The
distances between the fourchette and each of the center of the anal orifice and the inferior margin of the coccyx were measured using measuring tape in lititomy posision. Then
Anal position index(API) was calculated by dividing the first measurement by the second.
Results: the demographic characters of participants were as: mean age (27.9 ± 5.7),
mean weight (64.76 ± 8.36), mean height (164.66 ± 5.53), mean shoe size (23.83 ± 0.78).
the mean perineal length and Anal position index (API) was 3.1 ± 0.53 and 0.396 ± 0.051
There was positive correlation between weight, height, shoe size and perineal length
also Anal position index.
Conclusion: the associations between each of a short perineum and a small anal
position index and the frequency of episiotomy and of perineal tears has been shown
in different studies. So based of our results, most probably Iranian women have short
perineum and they are at bigger risk of perineal an Anal injury during delivery. Then
perineal support and choosing the right women for episiotomy can decrease perineal
injury significantly. the associations between each of a short perineum and a
