| خلاصه مقاله | Introduction: Balance impairment is one of the primary symptoms in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) which increases risk of falls and its complications. Poor balance in patients with MS seems to be associated with anticipatory (APAs) and compensatory postural adjustments (CPAs). The aim of this study is to find the relationship between clinical balance tests and laboratory measures of APAs and CPAs. Methods: In this study 34 patients with relapsing-remitting MS were included. APAs and CPAs of trunk and lower limbs were measured by surface electromyography and force plate. Moreover, balance-related clinical tools were Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Activities Specific Balance Confidence (ABC), Timed up and Go (TUG) and Falls Efficacy Scale (FES). We used Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficient for statistical analysis. Results: there was a significant correlation between BBS, ABC, TUG, FES scores and intensity and delay of APAs and CPAs of trunk and lower limbs during predictable and unpredictable perturbations (p<0.05). Conclusions: While perturbing patients with MS (either predictably or unpredictably), they show less intense and more delayed anticipatory and compensatory postural responses if they are lesser confident and more afraid of falling and if they have poorer functional balance and mobility. |
