| خلاصه مقاله | Background: Nowadays the mental health disorders are more prevalent. Pregnant women are considered a high-risk group regarding depressive disorder. Depression during the pregnancy and after the child's delivery is related to several health consequences for the mother herself and her neonate. In this study, we aimed to assess the relationship of pregnancy or postpartum depression with the past history of abortion. Methods: This case-control study was conducted in the North-West of Iran. All pregnant women and women who gave birth and were diagnosed to have depressive disorder in Azarshahr in 2019 were considered as the case group. The control group consisted of 150 non-depressive pregnant and postpartum women selected by systematic random sampling in the SIB database. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 18 software. A logistic regression test was applied to compare the history of abortion in the case and control group. Results: In total 15.3% of mothers suffering from pregnancy depression had a history of abortion. In the group of cases with postpartum depression, 15.9% reported experiencing previous abortions. Our regression analysis showed that mothers with previous abortions had significantly higher odds of depression during the pregnancy and postpartum with OR (95%CI) of 4.30 (1.7-11.2) and 4.50 (1.56-12.9), respectively. Conclusion: The history of abortion can be regarded as a risk factor for pregnancy or postpartum depression. The health care providers should apply the mothers with abortion experience a higher priority for screening, therapeutic interventions, behavioral consulting, and follow-ups visits. The fearing of pregnancy loss may be a factor for this relationship. |
