خلاصه مقالهIntroduction: Open visiting policy (OVP) becomes more significant in the field of infants, where family-centered developmental care is one of its rudimentary principles. Examining nurses' beliefs and attitudes might help to better plan and adopt an appropriate visiting policy that is based on the needs of the nurse, infant, and family and prevents potential challenges. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the attitudes of nurses in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) about the OVP. Methods: This is a descriptive-analytical study that was conducted in NICUs of Tabriz three teaching and medical centers of Al-Zahra, Children, and Taleghani in 2019. Participants included all nurses working in these units with a bachelor's degree or higher and with at least six months of work experience. Data collection tools included the nurses’ demographic information form and the 53-expression “Beliefs and Attitudes Toward Visitation in the NICU Questionnaire” (BAVNIQ), based on a five-point Likert scale. After collection, the data were entered into SPSS software version 19 and analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics. Ethical code: Code of ethics (IR.TBZMED.REC.1398.585) was obtained from Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. Results: A total of 113 nurses working in the NICU participated in this study. The mean age of the nurses participating in the study was 34.36±6.83, and 79.6% of them were married. The cumulative percentage of “completely agree” and “agree” answers to the OVP items was 46%, and the cumulative percentage of “completely disagree” and “disagree” answers was 66.91%. In ranking the nurses' attitudes toward open visiting, the highest percentage of scores was in the average rank (74.33%), and then in the weak rank (21.23%). Conclusion: The study results showed that nurses in NICU have moderate to weak attitude on OVP despite admitting the essential role of family presence and participation in the recovery and outcome of premature infants. This type viewpoint can be an essential barrier in establishment OVP and implementing family-centered care in the NICUs. Therefore, it seems necessary to train nurses and improve their attitude before changing visiting policies in the NICUs.
