| Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common organ dysfunction in critically ill patients with an incidence of up to 60% and is associated with short and long-term mortality in various clinical settings [1,2]. Currently, most clinicians use the “Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO)” standard to diagnose AKI. However, AKI diagnosis by serum creatinine and urine output is delayed and cannot fully reflect the current severity of kidney injury [3]. Previous studies have shown that an almost normal level of urinary potassium level in patients with chronic renal failure is associated with better long-term outcomes [4,5]. Results of recently performed studies have shown that sequential measurement of urinary potassium seems to be useful in critically ill patients at risk of AKI and is more useful than classically measured fractional excretion of sodium and urea. |
