| Introduction:
In orthodontic, reconstructive and aesthetic dentistry knowing the size of teeth can help in teeth reconstruction. Shreds of evidence show that the tooth size is affected by the reaction of the genetic and environmental factors. The aim of this study is the determination of the mesiodistal size of permanent teeth in referred patients for orthodontic treatments and teeth size comparison in right and left sides in both genres.
Materials and methods:
In this descriptive-analytical study 250 diagnostic casts of the orthodontic patients who referred to investigator office and density faculty of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences and had the study condition, were selected.
Measurements were done on the type 3 Aston casts of alginate molds and the biggest mesiodistal size, from medially anatomic contact point to distally anatomical contact point were recorded with a digital calliper. They were done by one person and the accuracy was 0/01.
Results:
Results showed that the total of mesiodistal sizes of teeth on both sides is the same. The total of the maxillary mesiodistally teeth sizes was significantly more than mandibular teeth. Between studied 6 teeth, mesiodistally size of the right canine teeth (in both jaws) in men was significantly more than women (p < 0/05). The mesiodistal size of the mandibular second premolar (in both sides) in men are significantly more than women. (p < 0/05). Total mesiodistal sizes of teeth in the maxilla and mandible in both right and left sides were the same.
As a result: Total of mesiodistal measurements in men and women was the same. The mesiodistal size of the right canine (in both jaws) and the mandibular second premolar (in both sides) in men were significantly more than women. |
