| خلاصه مقاله | Statement of the Problem: Labor pain is one of the most severe pains experienced by a women during her life. Severe labor pain has harmful effects on the mother and the fetus, so any method to reduce this pain is valuable. Interferential current (IFC) is a type of transcutaneous electrical stimulation that can reduce pain, especially deep ones. This randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT) aimed to study the effects of IFC on pain and duration of the active phase of labor in primiparous women. Methodology & Theoretical Orientation: In this RCT, 60 primiparous women (≥ 38 weeks) at the beginning of the active phase of labor were randomized into two groups of IFC and sham IFC. IFC group received IFC in two periods (30-45 min in each period), one at the onset of active phase (T10-L1 level) and the second time at the end of active phase (S2-S4 level). The sham group received sham IFC. Labor pain in different times of active phase, duration of active phase and some other variables were recorded for all participants in each group. Findings: Between-group changes showed a significant decrease in labor pain during the active phase in the IFC group compared to the sham IFC group (MD=-0.95; %95 CI=-1.35 to -0.55; P<0.001). The mean of active phase duration was significantly shorter in IFC group than sham IFC (MD= -38.25; %95 CI= -62.84 to -13.67; P=0.003). Conclusion & Significance: This study showed the safety of the use of interferential electrical stimulation during labor to reduce pain and duration of active phase, which can be valuable in improving the quality of care and encouraging natural childbirth. |
