Despite numerous descriptive and analytical researches, less has been dealt with in relation to the importance of relationship between occurrence of medical incidents and errors and level of occupational fatigue and cognitive failures among employees in health centers, working under supervision of health system
The relationship between simultaneous effect of occupational fatigue and cognitive failures at workplace and level of medical incidents and errors in health centers has been dealt with in the research through review study and, from among 35 articles collected from Web of Science, Scopus, Iran Medex, MagIran, SID, Pub Med, and Google Scholar databases, 12 articles in total in Persian and English languages have been selected with no time limit and in accordance with research objective; and, related data have been extracted
The results from eleven finally selected articles showed that in most of health centers, employees especially nurses have declared the wards they have been working in as problematic in terms of level of occupational fatigue and safety, as well as cognitive failures. Therefore, between three to seventeen percent of patients are prone to medical errors during their treatment procedure; and, such level of error can be reduced through safety training, as well as reduction of cognitive errors as well as occupational fatigue
Considering studies performed, review of effective factors on fatigue among nurses is of importance. To reduce cognitive errors and fatigue among employees in health centers, increasing numbers of nurses compared to those of patients, preventing sequential work shifts more than their abilities and testing them before employment as well as performing these test on them at the beginning of their employment would be of relatively high effect on prevention of occurrence of cognitive failures, followed by medical incidents and errors |
