خلاصه مقالهIntroduction Breast cancer is one of the most important cancers among women worldwide. Various imaging modalities such as mammography, ultrasound and MRI are being used for diagnosis of breast cancer; however, they have their own limitations. Diffuse optical imaging (DOI) is a novel imaging technique which is not only non-invasive and non-ionizing technique but also feasible and low-cost imaging modality that uses near-infrared light. The microstructure and functional parameters of the tissue can be assessed using its optical properties. In this study we explored the ability of DOI in differentiating malignant and benign tumors of breast. Methods Articles related to the topic were searched in the Scientific Databases such as Google Scholar, ScienceDirect and PubMed using the terms 'diffuse optical imaging', 'breast cancer', 'benign' and 'malignant'. We selected and reviewed the articles with the most relevance to the topic. Results Utilizing DOI let to achieve information about the properties of the light absorption and scattering rate in the tissue which are different in the tumors and normal breast. In addition, it can be used as a marker for differentiating type of the tumors. The malignant tumors indicated high absorption and scattering of the light. High absorption is due to the increased blood volume in the fast-growing tumors, and hence, increased hemoglobin amount. The results of some studies showed an increase in the water content of the malignancies compared to the surrounding normal tissues. On the other hand, benign tumors demonstrated lower light absorption and scattering or only lower scattering than the normal tissue. Conclusion Diffuse optical imaging can differentiate malignant and benign tumors of the breast by measuring the rate of the light absorption and scattering and the physiological parameters.
