| Streptobacillus moniliformis a commensal organism of the
upper respiratory tract of laboratory and wild rats causes rat bite and Haverhill fever in man. To
estimate the occupational hazard associated with Streptobacillus moniliformis infection in
individuals working in conventional animal houses, random sampling from 250 adult rats were
performed. Nasopharynx swabs were cultured on blood Agar, trypticase soy agar and trypticase
soy broth media. S. moniliformis was isolated from 120 (48%) apparently healthy rats. The data
suggested that there was a risk of rat bite fever in humans from laboratory rats. |
