خلاصه مقالهAbstract Introduction: Obese phenotype of asthma is thought to be mechanistically different from normal weight asthma. Aims and Objectives: We studied the peripheral blood eosinophil count (PBEC) in patients with asthma and tested the relationship to exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) and lung function test parameters. Methods: 44 patients with asthma without previous history of treatment with inhaled or systemic steroids were selected from a respiratory subspecialty clinic in Tabriz, Iran. After history and physical examination all patients had PBEC and eNO (using NObreath provided by Bedfont, UK) measured and spirometry (using Jaeger spirometer, Germany) performed with standard techniques. Levels of PBEC were compared between normal weight(BMI= 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m2 ) asthma and overweight or obese (BMI >= 25 kg/m2 )asthma its relationship to eNO and pulmonary function and oxygen saturation was tested. Results: The PBEC was significantly higher in normal weight asthma patients compared to overweight and obese asthma ( 5.61 % versus 2.71 respectively; p< 0.001) and level of PBE correlated significantly with eNO of the individuals (r=0.33: p<0.5) but none of these parameters had any meaningful relationship to pulmonary function parameters or oxygen saturation of the subjects. Conclusion: These findings indicated higher eosinophil count in patients with asthma with normal weight compared to overweight and obese asthma patients and this is another indication of different pathologic mechanisms in obese phenotype of asthma. Also this indicates lack of relationship of these markers with severity of changes of pulmonary functions tests or oxygen saturation.
