خلاصه مقالهIntroduction: One of the main leading causes of death in the world is cancer. Early diagnosis and treatment of cancers can be led to improve the survival of the patients. Routine therapeutic methods for cancer suffers from low specificity and making systemic toxicity. Recently, nanotheranostics with both diagnostic and therapeutic properties have attracted the researchers’ attentions. Nanotheranostics value is increased when they are included the nanostructures which can be used for bimodal or multimodal imaging. The purpose of this study was to review the graphene based nanotheranostics for bimodal MRI/optical imaging and cancer therapy. Methods: The keywords of “nanotheranostic, graphene, cancer, bimodal, MRI and optical imaging” were entered in the scientific databases of Scopus and PubMed. Among the related articles in the last five years, the most relevant articles for graphen based nanotheranostics with iron oxide nanoparticles were found and reviewed. Results: MRI contrast of the nanotheranostics had been provided by iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles and graphene derivatives (graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide) were responsible for optical imaging. Different coatings such as poly ethylene glycol, chitosan, silica and oleic acid had been used to reduce the toxicity. Therapeutic approaches with the nanotheranostics were included drug delivery and photothermal therapy. The therapeutic efficacy of anticancer drugs such as doxorubicin had been enhanced by conjugation with the iron oxide/graphene based nanostructures. According to the photothermal therapy results, the graphene based nanotheranostics showed potential to use for the ablation of Hella and MCF-7 cells in vitro. Conclusion: The usage of iron oxide/graphene based nanotheranostics for bimodal MRI/optical imaging and cancer therapy can increase the accuracy of the imaging and the efficacy of the treatment.
