To collect the required data, we will contact English-medium medical sciences journals published in Iran, and we will ask the editors in chief of at least 8-10 journals to share the electronic files of both the unedited versions and the edited versions of articles published between 2018 and 2020, on the condition of anonymity, edited by language experts having at least 5 years of editing experience. All the selected journals must have scientific research approval from ‘The Iranian Committee of Medical Science Journals of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education’ . We will exclude case reports and review articles and only the original research articles will be included. The data will be standardized by removing non-textual annotations such as titles, charts, diagrams, bibliographies, page numbers, acknowledgement, tables, figures, footnotes, endnotes, references, appendices, and pictures so that it will be easily readable by WordSmith tool version 8 (Scott, 2020).

Given the significance globally attached to producing and publishing high quality RAs, and the fundamental role that editors can play to linguistically enhance the quality of RAs produced by non-native authors, there is a surprising dearth of research exploring the effects of editing on particular aspects of non-native authors’ productions. In addition, Lexical bundles as one of the key elements of fluent linguistic production (Hyland, 2012), “help members of a discourse community to demonstrate solidarity with other members” (Esfandiari & Barbary, 2017, p.24) and the importance of systematic patterning of lexical items was extensively recognized and highlighted in language learning theories. Through collecting RAs in the fields of medical sciences that had undergone editing before being published, we will contrast their unedited and final versions in terms of the frequency of LBs and their structural and functional features, investigating whether or not the editing process can change the use of LBs in any discernable way.

Analysing  the structure and function of LBs vary across edited and unedited version of the medical research articles

Lexical bundles (LBs), recognized as building blocks of fluent language production and key components of academic discourse, have been studied extensively from various perspectives, but comparatively less attention has been paid to non-native authors who face numerous challenges in having their research published. Nor has there been a study to investigate the possible changes that LBs might undergo in non-native authors’ productions when submitted to copy editors. Therefore, to fill this gap, a corpus encompassing both edited and unedited articles in medical sciences written by Persian academics will be selected. Then, the frequency of 4-word bundles alongside their structural and functional features, as well as the changes the editing process could bring about in this regard will be studied. Pedagogically, our findings will have implications for research article writing classes, non-native academics, and copy editors.
Lexical Bundles (LBs) (theoretical): Formulaic word sequences or “prefabricated chunks, fixed, or semi-fixed expressions” (Howarth, 1998, p.24), which are reported to be present in all stretches of discourse (Biber, 2006; Biber et al.,1999), can be regarded as one of the key elements of academic writing, and a major differentiating trait of specific modes, registers, and genres (Hyland & Jiang, 2018). Lexical Bundles (LBs) ( Operational): In this study, formulaic sequences of 4 words will be selected as bundles to be analyzed through corpus analysis tool. Research article editing:Non-native English speaking (NNES) authors, in practice, are impelled to have their manuscripts reviewed by native English speaking (NES) authors (as required, at times, by the academic journal itself) (Li & Flowerdew, 2007; Willey & Tanimoto, 2013) or a particular type of language or academic expert, referred to by different terms, depending on .the kind of services they provide in improving the quality of the paper Research article editing (operational): In the present study, editing refers to copy editing or the service usually provided by language experts revising written material to improve readability and fitness, as well as ensuring that text is free of grammatical and factual errors
EAP teachers and Post graduate students: Our findings will have pedagogical implications for English for Research Publication Purposes’ (ERPP) classes. The results can be incorporated into instructional programs in RA writing classes to highlight the problem areas and pitfalls of employing LBs by NNS authors, especially Iranian ones. Copy editors: The copy editors can also benefit from the findings of the study through recognizing the fact that if their work is to enhance the quality of the paper they will need to extend their editorial interventions beyond lexico-grammatical correctness to include other rhetorical aspects in general, and use of LBs in particular
