خلاصه مقالهIntroduction: Diabetes is a prevalent metabolic disorder throughout the world and may provoke serious complications in affected patients. A marked increase in the prevalence of type II diabetes in Iran has paralleled the growing urbanization in recent decades. This pilot study was conducted to ascertain the spectrum of health care services that were received by a sample of Iranian type II diabetic patients and to identify gaps in fulfilling the best practice guidelines. Methods: Stratified random sampling method was used to recruit 234 registered diabetics (F=166, M=68) of the only Diabetes Clinic in the city of Khoy in North West of Iran. A semi-structured questionnaire was used in a face to face interview to collect data about the conventional cares they have received. Internal consistency of the questionnaire was examined by Cronbach's alpha reliability test (α=0.74) and crude relative frequency and rank order of preventive and precipitating measures of diabetes’ complications among study subjects was calculated using SPSS version 19. Results: Self care practices have been taught for 17.5% of the studied diabetics and 80.8% had at least one of the diabetes’ complications. Regular diabetes cares were obtained by 14.1% and 10.1% have been examined periodically for early detection of diabetes’ complications. Only 17.9% of the respondents were knowledgeable about kidney complication of diabetes but 89.3% had good knowledge about diabetes induced eye and foot ulcers. Adequate physical activity was reported by 25.2% of the interviewees. Conclusions: A huge gap observed between the standard best practice guidelines and actual provided services for the Iranian diabetic patients. While probability ofselection bias should not be ruled out completely, but the findings highlight the urgent needs exist for reviewing the Iranian National Health System’s performance with regard to diabetics’ care.
