| خلاصه مقاله | Objective
With regard to the health needs of older people, the promotion of physical activity
is a relatively new area. Moreover, mental health is an essential part of overall
health, and should be a vital and more recognized part for promoting active ageing.
This study carried out to investigate the role of physical activity in promoting
mental health amongst older people in Tabriz-Iran.
Methods
Using purposive sampling method 31 older people living in residential care home
were selected in this interventional study. Potential participants were recruited
based on their informed consent to participate and those who had severe cognitive
impairment or were too frail to undertake the survey were excluded. According to
the physical activity guidelines for older adults, moderate-intensity aerobic and
muscle-strengthening activities were planned for the residents. A face-to-face
interview was conducted by using the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) to
measure mental health status before and after intervention. Descriptive statistics,
Wilkcoxon rank-sum, Mann–Whitney U and Chi-Square tests were employed to
describe and analyse the data.
Findings
The results showed that status of somatic symptoms, anxiety and insomnia, social
dysfunction and severe depression were significantly different before and after the
intervention. Thus, good physical practices appear to be closely associated with
good mental health status.
Conclusion
Because many real obstacles get in the way of being physically active in later life,
special efforts are demanded by elderly and those caring for them to compensate
for this problem. Often, caregivers believe they are assisting the residents by doing
for and allowing them to be sedentary. Consequently, those involved in promoting
physical activity with older people may need more training, experience and
resources to help them develop their work. |
