| Background: The insertion of gastrointestinal stomas, including colostomy, is one of the most common surgical procedures in neonatal and pediatric surgery. After colostomy, multiple complications may occur to the patient, skin irritation around the stoma is one of these complications. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of honey on preventing skin disorders around colostomy in pediatric surgery. Materials and Methods: In this clinical trial, 30 patients who underwent colostomy implantation in Tabriz Children's Hospital during a six-month period were enrolled. The patients were followed up for skin lesions surrounding colostomy. Patients were randomly divided into two groups of case and control, which one group received honey for skin care and the other received placebo. Results: The mean age of patients was 1.10 ± 0.8 months . fourteen patients (7.46%) were male, 16 (35.3%) were female, 9 patients (0.30%) were neonates , 12 (40.0%) of them were infants and 9 (30.0%) were toddlers . Based on statistical analysis, there was no significant difference in the development or reduction of skin disorders around colostomy in the groups of patients receiving topical honey and placebo (p> 0.05). Also, there was no significant difference in sex and age groups (p> 0.05). Conclusion: According to the recent study, honey has no effect on the prevention or reduction of skin irritation around colostomy in children. |
