| Background: A proportion of renal transplant (RT) recipients are at high risk for acquisition of opportunistic infections. Methods: 101 plasma and urine specimens collected from RT patients who had plasma creatinine rising and were tested for three common viral pathogens for the suspicion of post-transplant nephropathy. Results: 19 (18.8%), 15 (14.8%) and 10 (9.9%) were positive for BKV, CMV and EBV in their plasma and/or urine, respectively. Of 19 BKV-positive patients, 12 (63%) and 17 (89%) were positive in plasma and urine, respectively. Four asymptomatic patients had high levels of EBV shedding in their urine. None of co-infected patients were showed nephropathy. Conclusion: Relying on plasma creatinine rising might not be a reliable indicator for evaluation of opportunistic infections in post-transplant RT subjects. |
