| Introduction: Oral cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world, accounting for more than 90% of cancers of the oral cavity is the squamous cell carcinoma. Recently, researchers have focused on identifying factors that affect the organic treatment of this cancer, one of which is vitamin D levels. Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the salivary levels of vitamin D in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma with healthy people.
Material and Methods: In this descriptive study, the target population of 41 people was selected among patients with oral squamous Cell Carcinoma referred to Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry and Department of Otolaryngology, Imam-Reza hospital. And 41 people were selected as control group. 2cc saliva samples received from each group. Vitamin D levels of the samples were evaluated by the total vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D) kit. The mean difference test for independent groups and Chi-square test at 95% confidence level were used for analyzing the research data. Results: The findings showed that levels of salivary vitamin D in healthy people (mean25.73ng/dl) are higher than those in squamous cell carcinoma patients (mean22.58ng/dl) and this difference is statistically significant and the research hypothesis is confirmed. (P-value<0.05) Conclusions: It seems that the assessment and determination of vitamin D levels be influential in early detection of oral squamous cell carcinoma and improve or reduce symptoms. Therefore, it is recommended that dentists and doctors consider Survey ofvitamin D levels and, if necessary, prescribe vitamin D supplements as a method of treatment in dealing with patients with squamous cell carcinoma. |
