| Purpose: Mixing mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) with different proportions of propylene glycol (PG) improves its handling property. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of mixing with PG on flexural strength of MTA.
Methods: One gram of MTA powder (Angelus, Londrina, Brazil) was mixed with 0.3 mL of either DW (DW group) or 20% PG-80% DW (DW-PG group) and packed into 10 × 2 × 2 mm molds to fabricate 24 MTA bars (n = 12 in each group). Following 48 hours incubation, the flexural strength of specimens was calculated using three-point bend test in a universal testing machine. Independent t-test was used to compare flexural strength between groups at a statistically significance level of P < .05.
Results: The flexural strength in DW-PG group was 25% less than DW group (4.52 ± 0.93 vs. 6.06 ± 0.92 MPa) which was statistically significant (P = 0.01).
Clinical significance: Mixing with PG significantly improves the consistency of the mixed MTA leading to easy handling but reduces the flexural strength. Therefore, when PG is mixed with MTA, a type of restoration which requires minimal condensation force is preferred for restoration of tooth before 48 hours. |
