The poisoning is one of the major problems threatening the public health and poisoning comprise a high percentage of visits at hospitals. According to Iranian legal medical organization reports, poisoning is the second cause of unnatural death in our country. In poisoned patients, the most common method of poisoning is suicide. Usually in many regions, suicide is criticized , but given that these patients are not incurable, and even if we consider it as incurable- due to severity of poisoning- any attempt to no treat the patient or delay in treatment or not providing the necessary equipment to treat the patient would be considered as assist to suicide or euthanasia. Thus according to the Iranian Islamic penal code, it is a crime and criminals will incur certain penalties. Hence, regardless of any assumptions, the medical staff based on humanitarian, ethical, religious and legal duty, should act. But given that in the current curriculum of Iranian medical schools clinical education and training of medical toxicology usually is not done, so lack of medical knowledge to treat poisoned patients, lack of taking the advice and experience of experts in forensic medicine and medical toxicology despite their presence at most universities, lack of toxicology ward with least equipment in medical centers, and on the other hand the prejudices can cause potential harm to poisoned patients and irreparable harm to the family of poisoned patients as well as the mental health of community. So beside the reform of social factors affecting the health that are the most common causes of suicide attention to the law, ethics and patient rights appears to be necessary. And it is hoped that scholars of medical ethics by discussion in the field of poisoned patients ethics can change the attitudes of people and officials toward the poisoned patients. Finally, with appropriate measures of authorities of the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education to improve education and treatment of poisoned patients, which based on the potentials of medical universities it is easy to achieve, we could witness the improvement of public health and achieve the overall health policy goals and final document of the Iran's 20-year vision |
